Haylou S40 ANC Review: Surprisingly Good at $44

When $200 headphones seem like the only option

Most people shopping for over-ear headphones with real active noise cancellation quickly hit the same wall: anything worth buying seems to start at $150 and climb fast from there. Sony, Bose, Apple - they all do it well, and they all charge accordingly. The budget alternatives tend to be a disappointment: weak ANC that barely touches background noise, generic sound, and plastic construction that telegraphs exactly how much you spent.

I went looking for something that could break that pattern. The Haylou S40 kept coming up in discussions, and the spec sheet looked almost too good for the price. So I dug in.

Honest review: what the S40 actually delivers

The noise cancellation is the headline feature, and it mostly earns it. The S40 uses hybrid ANC with a claimed 50dB attenuation - which is a serious number. In practical terms, it handles consistent background noise like air conditioning, traffic, and office chatter very well. If you stream from Tidal, Amazon Music HD, or similar, and you're on a compatible Android phone, you will hear a difference. More texture, better separation, cleaner high-frequency detail. The 360-degree spatial audio mode is also genuinely useful for movies and immersive content, not just a marketing checkbox.

Battery life is rated at 90 hours. Real-world use with ANC active brings that down, as it always does, but it remains exceptional for the price. Bluetooth 6.0 means the connection is stable and low-latency - audio and video stay synced without noticeable drift.

Here is the honest limitation: Haylou is not a household name, and the S40 shows it in a few ways. The design is utilitarian rather than premium - it looks like a budget headphone because it is one, and the build quality, while solid, does not have the refined finish of higher-end options. Also worth noting: LDAC is an Android feature. iOS users get standard Bluetooth quality, which means one of the product's biggest selling points disappears entirely on an iPhone.

What $44 normally buys in this category

At this price point, the over-ear ANC market splits into two camps. Established brands - Anker, EarFun, some Sony and JBL entry-level lines - offer decent sound but usually compromise on ANC quality or skip LDAC entirely. Generic no-name headphones fill the rest of the shelf, often with ANC that barely functions and build quality measured in weeks.

The S40 sits in an unusual position. LDAC support and Hi-Res Audio certification are features you typically find at $120 to $200, not $44. The ANC, while not class-leading, outperforms most of what this price range normally offers. For an Android user who wants to actually use high-resolution audio streaming without spending $150, the value calculation is hard to argue with.

Verdict: 7.5 out of 10. The Haylou S40 is not the best pair of headphones at any price, but it is the most capable pair I have found under $50. LDAC, 50dB ANC, Hi-Res certification, and 90 hours of battery in one package for $44 is a combination that should not exist at this price - and yet here we are. Android users who take audio seriously should look at this closely before paying three times as much for incremental improvements.
